Examining Resilience in Arts Education Programming

Arts education administrators are often tasked with providing outreach to communities that are not necessarily reflected within their current audience, staff or Board. This raises questions about organizational leadership and appropriate and respectful communication with new communities. Participants will be provided with practical approaches to respectful outreach to target groups outside of their usual demographic.

Hosted jointly by our colleagues at the Shaw Festival and Carousel Players, the day includes lunch and an invitation to stay for a performance of Alice in Wonderlandfollowing the mini-conference (subject to ticket availability).

Schedule:
10:00am: Arrival and tea/coffee gathering (Rehearsal Hall 3)
10:30am: Welcome! with Tim Jennings, Shaw Executive Director and Jessica Carmichael, Artistic Director Carousel Players (Rehearsal Hall 3)
10:45am: Morning conference: Outreach Beyond Your Organization with Jessica Carmichael and Brian Solomon (Rehearsal Hall 3)
12:45pm: Buffet lunch (MacDonald Heaslip Lounge)
2:00pm: Alice in Wonderland (Festival Theatre)

Cost:
PWYC for the Conference (Suggested payment of $10.00)
$15.00 per Alice in Wonderland ticket (Please note that the full ticket price to the performances is $25, but PAONE will provide a 50% subsidy to all Conference attendees. Tickets are subject to availability, and will be assigned first come, first serve. The ticket subsidy is offered to mini-conference attendees only.)

  • Your name
  • Your job title and organization
  • Please let us know if you require carpooling or if you have access to a car and are willing to drive
  • If you would like a ticket to the production of Alice in Wonderland
  • Please note any food allergies or dietary restrictions that you may have
  • Please bring payment (cash only) with you on April 28th. Receipts will be provided upon receipt of the payment. Individuals who do not show up on the day of the event or who cancel their performance ticket after April 20th will still be accountable for the full cost of the ticket.

Guest Speakers:

Jessica Carmichael is of British, Irish, Polish and Métis heritage. She is the newly appointed Artistic Director of the Carousel Players (St. Catherines, ON), director, actor, dramaturge and drama instructor. Jessica resides in Toronto, where she works with Native Earth Performing Arts as their Artistic Associate and facilitates their Playwrights Unit “Animikiig.” She is a recent graduate of the University of Alberta’s (UofA) MFA in Directing Program. Jessica has an MA in Text & Performance Studies from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and King’s College London (UK). She is a graduate of The National Theatre School of Canada’s Three Year Acting program.  Selected Directing includes: Savage (Native Earth), Good Grief (Native Earth, W26), girls!girls!girls!(SummerWorks 2013), The Ghost Sonata (Studio Theatre), Juliet, an adaptation (UofA), Skylight(UofA), The Sophocles Project (RADA), The Informer (Victoria School).  Assistant Directing includes: Christina, The Girl King (Stratford Festival), In Spirit (Native Earth), Yellow Moon(Studio Theatre), Edward The Second (Jerwood Vanbrugh Studio, UK), and Shelter (Citadel Theatre Young Company). Jessica has taught drama over the last 8 years; notably with the UofA’s Drama Department, the Citadel Theatre’s Foote Drama School and Free Will Shakespeare Company’s Summer Camps and School Outreach program. Currently Jessica is an instructor with Young People’s Theatre. She is also a current 2014 participant in the Michael Langham Workshop for Classical Direction at the Stratford Festival of Canada.

Multiple Dora and Gemini Award nominated Brian Solomon is of Anishnaabe and Irish descent, from the Northern Ontario village Shebahononing-Killarney. He is a graduate of the School of Toronto Dance Theatre, and holds an MA of performance from the Laban Center (UK).

Solomon has presented his works (Visual Art/Theatre/Dance) across Canada, Berlin, Ingolstadt, Bamberg, Amsterdam and London. A co-creation with German visual artist Judy Ross on their film “the Filmmaker”, won best prize for experimental film at Watch Out! film festival in Macedonia. Solomon has performed for a multitude of choreographers, directors and companies across Canada, the US and Europe. He has also taught for several arts institutions and companies, including one of Europe’s foremost universities for acting, H.F.S. Ernst Busch (Berlin). As a creator Solomon is passionate about helping people relearn the infinite possibilities of their ‘forgotten bodies’, and guiding them to take back the space those bodies occupy.
